Does it make sense to have a "personal God" or "personal faith"?

Doesn't this kind of deny cause and effect? Even in a spiritual sense, what we experience can't stay limited to us. How can concepts that our beyond are understanding be within our understanding and not universal? I mean, I also see the dangers in categorizing and proselytizing people left and right, but what do you think?
